枝折戸（しおりど）の作り方
十川日本庭園研究室です。枝折戸の作り方をご紹介いたします。
今回はやや高度な枝折戸の作り方です。枝折戸とは露地（ろじ）の中門（ちゅうもん）につける一種の扉で、庭の形態によって左右の開き方が異なります。近年、海外製品が大量生産・輸入されていますので、枝折戸を編む機会も減りました。茶道では、本質的なもてなしとして、お客様に対して青竹に勝る竹細工はありませんので、ぜひ皆様も挑戦してみてください。作業工程の写真は私の友人です。優れた技術をお持ちなので、十数年前に指導をお願いした時の画像です。なるべく多くの写真を取り入れましたので参考にしていただければ幸いです。
This is the Tokawa Japanese Garden Laboratory. I will show you how to make a shiorido(branch door).
This time, I used a slightly advanced method of making the branches.
A shiorido is a kind of door that is attached to the inner gate of a garden, and the way of opening is different depending on the form of the garden. In recent years, as overseas products have been mass-produced and imported, there have been fewer opportunities to knit branches. In the tea ceremony, there is no bamboo work that is better than green bamboo for guests’ hospitality, so please try it. The picture of the work process is my friend. Because you have excellent skills, this is the picture when I asked for guidance more than 10 years ago. I have included as many photos as possible, so I would appreciate it if you could refer to them.

枠の製作
竹を切り、枠を作ります。
※既製品の枝折戸の足部分を切る際には、竹にテープを巻いて鉄鋼用又は塩ビ用の刃の細かいノコギリを使用することをお勧めします。
*When cutting ready-made branches, it is recommended to wrap tape around bamboo and use a fine-edged saw for steel or PVC.
竹にテープを巻きます
赤鉛筆で印をつけます。
I’ll mark it with a red pencil.
ドリルで穴を開けます。
Drill a hole.
切り出しナイフ（クリコガタナ）で加工します。
Cut with a cutting knife (a short sword with a long and thin blade).
繰り小刀で穴の形を整えます
丸ノミを使った例です。
This is an example of using a round chisel.

穴に竹を差し込む
加工後に組み立て、トラックシートに使用する位のゴム紐で止めます。
After processing, assemble it and fix it with the rubber string of track seat.

編み付け
竹を割ります。（竹垣づくりのコツその２参照）
Break the bamboo. (See Tip 2 on how to make a bamboo fence.)
先ず、筋交い用の竹を剥いで幅をそろえます。これを「表皮剥ぎ（ひょうひはぎ）」と言うそうです。ここでは、ノコギリで切れ目を入れる工法です。筋交いは剥ぎ過ぎて薄くならないように注意。
First, you peel the bamboo for bracing and arrange the width. This is called “stripping”. Here is a method to make a cut with a saw. Be careful not to peel the bracing too thin.

細かい部分は繰り小刀で形を整えます
筋交いを取り付けます。おさまりが良くないときには、ドリルで穴を開けて竹くぎを打ちます。
Attach the brace. If it doesn’t fit well, make a hole with a drill and hit a bamboo nail.

編み付け用の竹を剥ぎます。薄くするのがコツです。
Peel off the bamboo you want to knit. The key is to make it thin.

節で止まった場合は、再度ノコギリを入れます。
If it stops at a knot, insert a saw again.
再度切れ目を入れ 
剥いでいきます
全部削げました。繰り返して必要な分だけ用意します。
竹を編み付ける所に印をつけます。
Mark where you want to knit the bamboo.
作業しやすいように立込み、中央を黒い棕櫚縄（しゅろなわ）で結束（けっそく）します。
To make the work easier, stand up and tie the center with a black palm rope.
竹の幅をそろえて、テープで止めます。
Line up the bamboos and tape them.
竹を編みこみます。これを、「表皮編み（ひょうひあみ）」と言うそうです
I knit the bamboo. This is called skin knitting.
赤い棕櫚縄で仮止めします。
Hold it temporarily with a red palm rope.

ゆがみを調整します。
Adjusts the distortion.
大きめの洗濯バサミで膨らみを押さえます。
Use large clothespins to prevent swelling.
二枚目を反対方向から編み付けます。
Knead the second piece from the opposite direction.
三枚目です。
The third one.
四枚目です。
It’s the fourth one.
完成 Finished
編みつけが完了しました。
The knitting is complete.
黒い棕櫚縄で結束して、赤の仮止めをはずします。
Tie with a black hemp rope and remove the red temporary stop.
